It was, however, repetitive. Every day was the same. There were no difficult choices to make; much like reality television is portrayed today. The decisions they make and the outcomes do not truly reflect what would happen if an ordinary person does the same. The actors in today’s reality television have welcomed the public eye to see everything they are doing, but this isn’t true for everyone in society. While the rest of the society hasn’t invited anyone to track their actions, government and other organizations are already doing this in many ways. These groups have the ability to put up surveillance cameras to track when people are in different locations. They can track internet, credit card and cell phone usage. When traveling by a cell tower, for example, the tower stores the location information in a database. It is ready to be revealed to any government official when solicited (ACLU). Purchases can be tracked, along with, vacations, hotel stays, etc. According to an article written by Daniel J. Solove, for The Chronicle of Higher Education, the most common response to privacy advocates is â€Å"Only if you’re doing something wrong should you worry, and then you don’t deserve to keep it private. † (cite ). The problem with the government collecting private information goes beyond someone doing right or wrong. Some of the problems resulting from collecting and using personal data include the fact that people do not know that this data is being collected about them. They cannot fix an issue if they do not know this technology exists. Another problem with government gathering and using personal data is the distortion of the data. It often fails to reflect the whole person and can paint an untrue picture (Chronicle). Privacy is not typically lost with one major action, but it occurs over time with many pieces of information being collected and used to make assumptions about a person. The question is can it be stopped? The best way to slow down the invasion of privacy is to be careful of the information a person is freely giving out, especially on the internet. Information provided in emails, Facebook, on-line shopping sites, use of credit-cards, or completing surveys for a â€Å"free-gift† all contribute to an ongoing database of personal information. Consumers can continue to express their opinions with government representatives on how this personal information is collected and used. Those who want an increase in privacy should encourage the policy makers to look at the spending programs, regulatory agencies, privacy-invading regulations and investigative agencies for influence (Privacilla). Each year, someone new is chosen and killed, and no family is safe. Like in the Crucible the villagers focused on maintaining public reputation, the townsfolk of Salem must fear that the sins of their friends and associates will taint their names. Many kept blaming each other so it was almost like they were chose at random because everyone kept getting blamed. * In â€Å"The Lottery† villagers turn against the victim much like many turned on those accused of being a witch. The instant that Tessie Hutchinson chooses the marked slip of paper, she loses her identity as a popular housewife. Her friends and family participate in the killing with as much enthusiasm as everyone else. Tessie essentially becomes invisible to them in the fervor of persecution. Although she has done nothing â€Å"wrong,† her innocence doesn’t matter. She has drawn the marked paper- she has herself become marked- and according to the logic of the lottery, she therefore must die. * Tessie’s death is an extreme example of how societies can persecute innocent people for absurd reasons. Those who are persecuted become â€Å"marked† because of a trait or characteristic that is out of their control like in the Crucible they cannot control who was blaming them. Just as the villagers in â€Å"The Lottery† blindly follow tradition and kill Tessie because that is what they are expected to do, people in real life often persecute others without questioning why. As Jackson suggests, any such persecution is essentially random, which is why Tessie’s bizarre death is so universal. * The Crucible is the role that hysteria can play in tearing apart a community. Hysteria supplants logic and enables people to believe that their neighbors, whom they have always considered upstanding people, are committing absurd and unbelievable crimes- communing with the devil, killing babies, and so on. These views are illustrated by Fanthorpe in her collection of poems Safe as Houses and two of these poems that tie in with this theory are The Unprofessionals and Water Everywhere. The first poem looks at the event of bereavement after the death of a close person and the time of consoling and supporting the individual through their mourning phase. The poem indicates that the people surrounding you who have come to support you during your bereavement dont have their presence appreciated, as it is expected from them to be there during this time and situation. In the opening stanza of the poem the Fanthorpe describes the moment as The worst thing and the use of the superlative adjective demonstrates that the person is going through the worst crisis of their life, in this circumstance the death of a close one and that this tragedy would have a knock on affect through the life of the grief stricken person. The references above to the use of religious terms such as shrine or confessional boxes demonstrates to the user that the toilet is a sanctified site for the worshippers of water. The poet tries to manipulate everyday objects that we use with water to exemplify that water is something that we take for granted and uses the common places of the toilet and bathtub to show us that we use the water but dont acknowledge its use. Another amusing look at the water as a God is the imaginative idea that Fanthorpe creates the feeling to the reader that the gurgling sound coming from the plug hole is in fact the water gods prophecies. Here he sometimes speaks In loud, disquieting, oracular tones. Fanthorpe also uses the significance fish in Christianity to exemplify the details of the theory of the water God. Here the poet signifies that fishing is a ritual of the God as people are casting there fishing rods as a gesture to the Deity and that the people taking part are demonstrated as meditating towards the water god but in fact are too busy finding the catch of the day. There are so many fun activities to do in, on, and around the water; thus, making it a difficult choice a as to which way to spend a day in the sun. Whether it’s a creek, lake, river or the ocean, there are may ways to have fun in the water, and stay cool. Surfing is a water sport in which the wave rider, referred to as a â€Å"surfer,† rides on the forward face of a wave, which is most often carrying the surfer towards the shore. Waves suitable for surfing are primarily found in the ocean, however, modern-day surfing can also be done in man-made sources such as wave pools. Snorkeling is a form of recreational diving that allows swimmers to explore the surface of oceans or lakes, and dive to shallow depths. Basic equipment used in snorkeling are the dive mask, fins and a snorkel. The dive mask allows clear vision of the underwater environment without damage to the eyes. Fins allow a swimmer to propel, his or her self, through the water efficiently and with minimal disturbance to the environment. The snorkel is designed to allow you to submerge your face and head at the surface of the water, and still breath. Additional snorkeling equipment includes; snorkel, vests for floatation, and protective wet suits for cold water diving conditions. Tubing is a water sport that usually takes place on a large body of water such as a lake or river. One or more tube riders, (often called â€Å"tubers†) tether their tubes to a powered watercraft, such as a ski boat or a pontoon boat. The riders are then towed through the water by the watercraft. Noodling is a type of fishing for the thrill seeker. Although the concept of catching fish with only the use of the arm in the water is simple enough, the process of noodling is more complicated. The choice of catfish as the prey is not arbitrary, but comes from the circumstances of their habitat. Flathead catfish live in holes or under brush in rivers and lakes, thus making the fish easy to capture. To begin, a noodler (fisherman) goes underwater to depths ranging from only a few feet, up to twenty feet, and places his hand inside a discovered catfish hole. Assuming all goes as planned, the catfish will swim forward and latch onto the fisherman’s hand, usually as a defensive maneuver, as an attempt to protect it’s hole. The fish can be particularly large, in which case, the noodler can hook his hand around its gills to retrieve his catch. This sport has been outlawed in several states due to the many dangers, and risks of the sport. As you can see there are a verity of water sports to choose from when you plan your next out door adventure. From surfing crystal blue waters, to taking chanced in a merry catfish hole, there is a water spot to suit every type of thrill seeker.
